Why do these helpful characters, like Jeremy Irons', have to die? He was the main appeal of the whole film, and I get a bit tired of these deaths that leave the main character orphan. Fault of the story, not the film, but my main problems are with the story anyway.

Yes, that was one of my main problems with the book: you have such a great character, why kill him off so fast? Unless Chris Paolini (the author of the books) is going to pull an LOTR on us and have Brom resurrected in the third novel. I really think Paolini's style has so much potential, its a shame he didn't choose a more original vehicle to showcase it in than this rather simplistic LOTR rehash. There are some great things to the books, and I really enjoyed reading them, but some parts are exactly out of LOTR or StarWars. And because the movie so condensed the novel, any sense of pacing of the plot that was found in the novel is essentially lost. My suggestion would be to read the novels yourself and then decide about the storyline. The movie didn't do it justice at all, the novels are much more compelling.

Your comments about Durza are interesting. He was one of my favorite characters in the film, I thought Robert Carlyle did a great job. On the other hand, you are entirely right about Galbatorix really being an unnecessary character, much like Horogothgar (the king of the dwarves) was in the film. These characters just seemed like a cheap attempt on the part of the filmmakers to pay lip service to some of Paolini's characters without really giving them any importance.

If you do decide you read the novels, it would be interesting to see if your feelings change, or if you still find the storyline weak.

Maybe they were just tossed there without any particular reason, just to be seen. You cannot speak about the evil king Galbatorix, what he has done, his plans etc and not appear him at least for a couple of minutes. The same goes for the king of dwarves I suppose, they have said that some dwarves and elves exist somewhere, so it was necessary present one king. I bet both will have much bigger and more interesting part on the second novel/movie, the same as Galbatorix's dragon.

Actually, at the end of the second book/movie, Eragon (after learing what it really means to be a Dragonrider from a wizened old elf dude) learns the terrible truth about his father and is forced to fight a direct blood relative who has become evil....

Eh, it's decent movie, but the whole thing is just too direvative. Agree 100% with the person who said it was the story of Star Wars set in a LotR world with a dash of Pern. Let's pray to god that the third book doesn't introduce a race of hairy little people who fight off the evil ruler's army... well, unless it's dwarves, that might actually be tolerable.

Paolini has said that he's only going to write the three books. But depending on how well the film(s?) go, I could see him maybe doing another trilogy after this one, although there's no official word on it either way from him.

I'd like to see him finish the trilogy, then move on to something different; the hero's journey is SOOOOOO old.
