Warlock Video Game

Post by Speedwagon »

Apparently the new D&D video game takes place in Darkon. Here's an article from EN World:

Gotta say, I'm stoked to see this.

Setting looks great. Combat looks just like Hogwarts legacy, which I thought was fun but repetitive. I was bored silly by BG3 so I'll wait, but what else is my steam deck for?

Anyone else found it interesting that the imp's name is Skev? Especially if you remember Azalin's familiar in From the Shadows?

So, pre-kabooooom Darkon? That's good news. I didn't like the 5e darkon.

I'm pretty sure this is 5e Darkon but the reference to Skeever is to tie into the broader metaplot of Mist Hunters (the Adventurer's League campaigns that tackled it) and Azalin more broadly. I'd be pretty surprised if this were not 5e Darkon. Still, I'm looking forward to being able to play in Darkon in a video game---I know I've been itching for something that isn't Barovia for quite a while!

Tasha is the main character’s patron.

The scattershot approach they’ve taken with Tasha is weird. They’ve tried to make her heroic, and quietly ignored the time she kept Gra’azt as a sex slave for 100 years.

"Heroic" isn't exactly the vibe I'm getting, but will have to play the game to find out for sure. Also, I would be very disappointed if the story didn't have an option to betray/double-cross Tasha at some point. After all, stories about Faustian pacts usually have the protagonist come to regret the deal they've struck, and seek to either escape or outwit their supernatural "benefactor."

She’s more heroic in Witchlight and Eve of Ruin.

In Witchlight, I remember her having a secret room full of literal demon babies, which provided a clue that she's not entirely on the up-and-up, despite her "fairy queen" disguise.

I've yet to sit down to read Eve of Ruin. Just a quick perusal of that book made me want to close it and spare myself the time and aggravation. Trying to capitalize on Vecna's 15 minutes of fame to trick DMs into running a series of commercials for Wizards' other IP properties is a peak Hasbro move.

Feels more like reskinned FromSoft Souls/-borne than Darkon. But, any fairness, I love Fromsoft games.

To say it was a massive disappointment is an understatement. I wanted to run something for my party that went through Curse of Strahd, but it’s just… bad.

Probably Kargat enforcers? I'm reminded of Gaz II's assertion of "wolves to guard the sheep," and I think this is meant to reference that. Monsters on the side of the Rex and monsters that are not. I'm really interested in the biomes and maps for the little villages and places of Darkon, even if it's 5e Darkon. Being able to play in it sounds like fun to me, and the interview gave me a good impression. Hopefully this isn't bad, or it's at least playable enough that I can get some inspiration from this that I can work into my own D&D games.
