Ismark Indrirovich (also known as Ismark the Lesser) is an NPC from the initial I6: Ravenloft module. He the son of the Kolyan Indrirovich, and stepbrother to Ireena Kolyana. He resided in the village of Barovia and frequents the Blood o' the Vine Inn. His father was murdered by Strahd von Zarovich. Ismark is aware that Strahd desires his sister, though he knows not why. Ismark can also identify the letter written to lure the PCs written by Strahd was not written by Kolyan.

According to Domains of Dread, the module I6 takes place in year 528 BC.

In Expedition to Castle Ravenloft
In this 3rd Edition reboot of I6, Ismark is classed as an aristocrat. He can tell the PCs of both the zombie plague and the Lightbringers If the plague is not stopped, he is doomed as is the rest of the village to die and join the ranks of Strahd's undead.

In Curse of Strahd
In this module, Ismark's name has been corrected to Ismark Kolyanovich (See "Note" as to why). Ismark takes a much more active role in this module than previous remakes of I6. In the CoS continuity, he has trained in combat for many years to prepare for the day he will slay Strahd von Zarovich, but he first seeks to move Ireena from the Village of Barovia to Vallaki in the hope of moving out of Strahd's reach. Once her safety is secured, he may accompany them on the player characters eventual attack on Castle Ravenloft However, noone in the Village of Barovia has helped him with travel to Vallaki.

Madame Eva's card reading may reveal Ismark Strahd's Enemy.
Note
Note that while Ireena's last name, Kolyana, means "daughter of Kolyan," by real-world Slavic custom, Indirovich would mean "son of Indir" (or some name similar to Indir). So Ismark should probably be Ismark Kolyanovich, if Barovian custom follows the same construction. (Kolyan is the son of Indir, and Ismark is the son of Kolyan.)
Along with his wife Elizabeth Durst, Gustav Durst led a cult devoted to Strahd in Death House (Location) prior to their eradication. Now Gustav lives on as a ghast.

History
Gustav was the husband of Elizbeth Durst. Together they had two children, Rose Durst and Thorn Durst. He had a third, illegitimate child, Walter Durst, the product of an affair with a nursemaid. The child was stillborn, and the cult murdered the nursemaid soon after. Rose and Durst at some point also met their demise after Gustav and Elizebeth locked inside the attic and summarily forgotten to starve to death, though it is unclear if Rose and Thorn's deaths happened before or after their were slain and rose again as undead.

Gustav and Elizabeth led a cult that saw Strahd as a sort of dark messianic figure. Strahd cared little for the cult's devotion and rejected them. However, they nonetheless kidnapped and sacrificed people in his name. After they murdered a band of adventurers Strahd had lured to be his playthings, Strahd descended upon them and slew them all inside Death House, leaving the place a wretched den of evil and a haunted house. Although most of the cultists that rose again form the dead came back as spirits, Gustav and his wife arose again as ghasts. Nothing is detailed about their current relations, but they seem to remain together considering they can be encountered together in their living quarters in area 34
Ezmerelda d'Avenir is an NPC from Curse of Strahd. In the continuity of that module, she is a Vistani and former protege of Dr. Rudolph van Richten. Ever since hearing of her former mentor's decision to hunt Strahd in Barovia, Ezmerelda has searched for van Richten, unknowing of his use of the Rictavio guise.

History
Much of Dr. van Richten's early history before he came a monster hunter remains the same. One key difference is that he did not wholesale murder the Vistani that kidnapped his son Erasmus van Richten. In fact, one of them, Ezmerelda appeared to him one day and expressed her remorse, eventually becoming van Richten's student in monster hunting. However, their relationship frayed after a couple of years, and at, Ezmerelda's suggestion, they left each other's company amicably.

Eventually, Dr. van Richten set his sights upon the destruction of Strahd. Rictavio came to Barovia in the guise of Rictavio and set up shop at a then abandoned tower formerly belonging to the wizard Khazan. Dr. van Richten made Khazan's old tower his own for a time, before moving on to Vallaki and setting up shop there. In the meantime, Ezmerelda heard rumors about her former mentor's travel to Barovia to take out Strahd, and she traveled to Barovia to find van Richten, eventually setting up shop in his old tower.

In Curse of Strahd
In this module, Ezmerelda seeks to find van Richten, or, barring that, to continue his work of destroying Strahd. She be encountered operating out of Van Richten's Tower or the Abbey of Saint Markovia. In the latter case, she says as one of the Abbot's special guests, having befriended him but actually using the Abbey as a good place to ambush Strahd, though if encountered here and the player characters seem devoted to Strahd's destruction, she readily joins with them and gives up her old plans. Ezmerelda may also be randomly encountered on the roads of Barovia or in Castle Ravenloft. She joins with the player characters much more readily than her loner mentor.

Emzerelda may be revealed by the tarokka card reading of Madame Eva to be Strahd's Enemy. Like Eva, Emzerelda can perform tarokka card readings herself.
Baron Vargas Vallakovich is an NPC from the 5th Edition module Curse of Strahd. In the timeline of the module, Baron Vargas is also burgomaster of Vallaki. Baron Vargas is no friend of Strahd von Zarovich and in fact knows him to be a terrible monster, but there is a problem that makes Vargas himself reviled by the Vallakian people. A narcissist who brooks no disagreement, Baron Vargas is deluded in his belief that if he can force eternal happiness and hope in his subjects through continual celebrations and festivals, this will protect the town from Strahd's influence. The jaded townsfolk do not agree.

Relationships
Baron Vargas is married to Lydia Petrovna. Though not evil herself, she has bought into Vargas' foolish doctrine. On the other hand, Vargas and his son, Victor Vallakovich, are estranged from each other. Victor mostly evades the attention of his parent, holding himself up creating a way out of Barovia. Izek Strazni is Vargas' personal enforcer, as the baron took the shunned outcast in off of the street.

Though Vargas is not well-liked, there are two figures in particular that are not friendly with him. Udo Lukovich, a local cobbler, publicly criticized him; Vargas imprisoned Udo in retalation. Though Udo is hardly significant, Lady Fiona Wachter, an influential member of the Wachter Family, is a true enemy but for an entirely different reason than Vargas' bullying. She is a loyal supporter of Strahd, and she seeks the title of burgomaster for herself. To this end, she conspires to overthrow him.

In Curse of Strahd
Several days prior to the player characters arrival in Vallaki, Baron Vargas held the Wolf's Head Jamboree and ordered Udo's arrest. After they arrive, he holds the Festival of the Blazing Sun He is ignorant of the conspiracies against him, both Lady Wachter's (see p. 110) and Strahd's vampire spawn (see p. 97-98, 116-117)
At one point, Lady Fiona Wachter attempted to hitch up her daughter Stella Wachter up to Victor as part of a conspiracy to gain power over Vallaki, but the incident ended horribly. Once the lover of Burgomaster Ivan Randovich, Marilena became a banshee after Ivan murdered her. She has vowed revenge upon him and the town. As in life, Marilena is a manipulator and has a black soul just as much as the burgomaster she professed to love. She haunted Fidatov Manor, bound by a curse she herself laid. By day, she appears much as a normal mortal, but by night she takes on a nightmarish transformation with the rest of the manor. It is only during the nighttime that she can be permanently destroyed.
History
Marilena and Ivan became lovers just to exploit each other. Marilena eventually grew skeptical about Ivan's faithfulness and verified her suspicions with a reading of the tarokka. She broke off their relationship, earning Ivan's wrath. During a gala ball, he employed a bribed servant to poison her food. As she died, Marilena called to the Dark Powers to ensure nobody else benefit from her estate.

The Dark Powers responded to Marilena's plea by placing a powerful and horrific curse upon Fidatov Manor and its inhabitants. By day, they would experience again their final hours just prior to death. By night, they would experience a ghoulish transformation, in which the soulless Barovians transformed into vile undead while those with souls became wererats. The manor took became warped and decayed each night. The next morning, everything revert back, nobody holding any memories of the transformation. Marilena Fidatov was the only exception. For a time, few visitors would come to Fidatov Manor, as the burgomaster forbade all travel to it. While guarding the wealth accumulated wealth, Marilena became funneling magic into a sorcery that enhanced Barovia's horrific winter, though only slightly.

Sometime before or after her death, Marilena was in contact with Costel Barbu, the barber of Orașnou, about a dangerous cannibal and murderer named Eugen Adi. Marilena sent Costel an invitation offering the Barbu family asylum at the mansion and a ring of spell-storing armed with a spell to protect him from Eugen. Sadly, it did not reach its destination in time for Costl to read it before Eugen ate him alive. Instead it fell into the hands of Costel's mentally impaired son, Luca Barbu, whom could never read it.

Eventually, the invitation fell into the hands of adventurers. Burgomaster Ivan called them to visit the manor, in the hopes they might convince Marilena to give the village supplies to get through the winter. The adventurers confronted Marilena in her undead form and ultimately destroyed her. With her death, the other unnatural inhabitants of the manor stayed deceased, and the manor no longer changed appearances. Whether Marilena's cursed treasure remained cursed to bring Marilena's former curse to greedy thieves remains to be seen.
Graxxygak, also referred to by Esmae Amarantha as the Second Obsession, was a half-dragon troll turned ghost from the Moonsea region of Faerun. Denied in life the support and approval of his dragon father, It was easy for Esmae Amarantha to manipulate him into becoming one of her elite agents known to her as the Obsessions. He was tasked with finding Tatyana's gloves.

History
Graxxygak is the son of the Faerunian dragon Throstulgrael and a troll mother. Graxxygak venerated his his father, but the dragon- now a dracolich- did not give Graxxygak much heed. Adventurers intruding upon Throstulgrael's lair slew Graxxygak, but the half-dragon troll rose again as a ghost, hoping to find the appreciation in undeath denied to him in life. This is not to say that Graxxygak had no admirers- somewhere in life or undeath he gained at least two normal troll followers. However, Graxxygak seemingly held an unusually strong need- perhaps even obsession- to fill the void in his heart. To make matters worse, becoming a ghost rendered a shift from a fierce personality to an uncertain and apprehensive one. In essence, Graxxygak was a suffering creature without direction in life.

Graxxygak eventually was eventually drawn to the Land of Mists- in specific, Barovia. There he was discovered by Esmae Amarantha, the most powerful of the Barovian Witches. Graxxygak's misery left him in a state vulnerable to manipulation- a fact that Esmae keenly recognized. Esmae exploited Graxxygak's obsession to put him to work in the service of her own- that of winning Strahd's heart by transforming into an immortal incarnation of Tatyana Federovna. Esmae tasked Graxxygak with finding the gloves formerly worn by Tatyana.

Graxxygak's pursuit of his given mission grew into a full obsession with all gloves, to which he began hoarding. Although an incorporeal being, Graxxygak could manipulate objects via telekinesis. In fact, since coming to Ravenloft, Graxxygak's telekinetic ability was enhanced- a gift from the Dark Powers allowed Graxxygak to use his telekinesis from the Ethereal Plane. Moreover, that same dark gift allowed him to use his possession ability from the Ethereal Plane.

Graxxygak eventually located Tatyana's gloves in the town of Orașnou, in the hands of a woman named Sari Florica. Uncertain of how to seize the gloves without drawing attention, Graxxygak delayed acting until another enigmatic being known only as the Visitor came into the picture. Like Esmae, the Visitor was a skilled manipulator whose interest was also in taking control of Graxxygak- though by appealing to the Dark Powers rather than Graxxygak himself. To this end, the Visitor believed he would gain control over Graxxygak with the proper sacrifice. To this end, the Visitor took an interest in Sari
- though the Visitor's interest may have been more than a mere sacrifice. Regardless, the Visitor orchestrated the murder of Sari and her betrothed, Benedek Durril, with Benedek's own brother, Regold Durril, as the murderer. However, the murders failed both to conjure Graxxygak's spirit and to subject the ghost to the Visitor's control. To accomplish Graxxygak's subjugation, the Dark Powers would require a willing sacrifice, that is, a suicide. Fortunately, a suitable target presented itself- the guild-ridden Regold. To this end, the Visitor planned Regold's suicide as part of a ritual in the Vault of the Royal Dead in Glumpen Swamp.

The Visitor's ritual may or may not have been successful, as it was interrupted by adventurers following Sari's ghost. Regardless of its ends results, the ritual did not prevent prevent the abduction of Sari or the delivery of Tatyana's gloves to Esmae before Graxxygak's ultimate disappearance. The fate of Graxxygak- and of Sari- remains unknown.
Overview
Inajira is a fiend, an arcanaloth from Gehenna in the Lower Planes, called into the mortal world by Count Strahd von Zarovich. He is a collector who deals in souls.

From this fiend, individuals can be granted in this life their heart's desires. In exchange, Inajira is granted proprietorship in the existence to follow over their immortal souls. Individuals entering into such a contract sooner or later come to regret it. One does not get the better of Inajira. He is not deceived, rather it is he who deceives.

Inajira despises Count Strahd von Zarovich who has, so far, evaded the enforcement of the contract that binds them. Judging by Azalin's comments, Inajira and Azalin hold no love for each other either.

Background
Inajira first came to Ravenloft as a result of the events concluding the Grand Conjunction. During these final events, the Demiplane of Dread burst open to let all of its prisoners free onto the Prime Material Plane. Strahd traveled to the Prime Material Plane version of Barovia. This gave Inajira the opportunity to both wreak horrible revenge upon Strahd. In addition, Inajira hoped to retrieve the Book of Keeping (see below) that Strahd had conned Inajira into lending him. (Without his Book of Keeping, Inajira was an exile from his home in Gehenna. To this end, Inajira teleported into Castle Ravenloft on the Prime Material Plane and murdered King Barov von Zarovich VI, mistaking him for Strahd. Inajira quickly realized his error and kidnapped Queen Kristiana von Zarovich to use as a bargaining chip in an elaborate scheme to get his Book of Keeping back. However, Inajira's plans became unglued when his Book of Keeping was destroyed with the touch of the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind and the Mists claiming the fiend when it took back Azalin and Strahd.

Activities in Ravenloft
For the most part, Inajira has been keeping a low profile in the Land of Mists. He masquerades as a mortal, being able to maintain a given facade for but a year or two. He dwells invariably in Barovia or its surrounding domains. Presently, he passes himself for as a magistrate and an amateur alchemist in Teufeldorf where he occupies an unwelcoming manor that is furnished principally with with old books and arcana paraphernalia.

Zartin the Red is known to have encountered Inajira in a conflict with Strahd.

Although Dr. Rudolph Van Richten speculates there might be a connection between Inajira and Arijani, there is no apparent connection.

Inajira's Book of Keeping
Inajira's Book of Keeping is where he keeps the record of his contracts. They are signed in blood. As an artifact, it is immune to all damage or harm from normal sources. Since Inajira's arrival in Ravenloft, he has busied himself with filling the pages of its replacement, a phylactery given to him thanks to the Dark Powers.

In Myth and Legend
The name of this fiend is sometimes recorded as Ijrail or Inraji, such as the legends of the Tergs calling a fiend to send after then General Strahd. In these legends, General Strahd banished the fiend. This may be a reference to the event that fulfilled completed Hyskosa's Hexad and defeated the Grand Conjunction. In brief, adventurers went back in time to when Inajira was about to complete the pact with Strahd and banished the fiend before he got the chance, thus changing history.

Reality Wrinkle
10,000 ft, Corruption Index 0

Comparison With Standard Arcanaloths
Inajira is unique among arcanaloths in that he casts spells as a wizard. Most arcanaloths cast spells as sorcerers. The reason of this difference is unknown.
