[[Ismark Indrirovich]] (also known as [[Ismark the Lesser]]) is an [[NPC]] from the initial [[I6: Ravenloft]] module. He the son of the [[Kolyan Indrirovich]], and stepbrother to [[Ireena Kolyana]]. He resided in [[the village of Barovia]] and frequents the [[Blood o' the Vine Inn]]. His father was [[murdered]] by [[Strahd von Zarovich]]. Ismark is aware that Strahd desires his sister, though he knows not why. Ismark can also identify the letter written to lure the PCs written by Strahd was not written by Kolyan.<ref>[[Ravenloft I6]] p. 8-9</ref><ref>[[House of Strahd]] p. 19-20</ref>

Along with his wife [[Elizabeth Durst]], Gustav Durst led a [[cult]] devoted to [[Strahd]] in [[Death House (Location)]] prior to their eradication. Now Gustav lives on as a [[ghast]].<ref>[[Death House (Module)]] p. 3, 9</ref>

==History==
Gustav was the husband of Elizbeth Durst. Together they had two children, [[Rose Durst]] and [[Thorn Durst]]. He had a third, illegitimate child, [[Walter Durst]], the product of an affair with a nursemaid. The child was stillborn, and the cult [[murdered]] the nursemaid soon after.<ref>Death House p. 7</ref> Rose and Durst at some point also met their demise after Gustav and Elizebeth locked inside the attic and summarily forgotten to starve to death,<ref>Death House p. 4</ref> though it is unclear if Rose and Thorn's deaths happened before or after their were slain and rose again as [[undead]].

Gustav and Elizabeth led a cult that saw Strahd as a sort of dark messianic figure. Strahd cared little for the cult's [[devotion]] and rejected them. However, they nonetheless [[kidnapped]] and [[sacrificed]] people in his name. After they [[murdered]] a band of [[adventurer]]s Strahd had lured to be his playthings, Strahd descended upon them and slew them all inside Death House, leaving the place a wretched den of [[evil]] and a [[haunted house]].<ref>p. 3</ref> Although most of the cultists that rose again form the dead came back as spirits, Gustav and his wife arose again as [[ghast]]s. Much of Dr. van Richten's early history before he came a monster hunter remains the same. In fact, one of them, Ezmerelda appeared to him one day and expressed her remorse, eventually becoming van Richten's student in monster hunting. Baron Vargas Vallakovich is an [[NPC]] from the [[5th Edition]] [[module]] [[Curse of Strahd]]. In the timeline of the module, Baron Vargas is also [[burgomaster]] of [[Vallaki]]. Baron Vargas is no friend of [[Strahd von Zarovich]] and in fact knows him to be a terrible monster, but there is a problem that makes Vargas himself reviled by the Vallakian people. A narcissist who brooks no disagreement, Baron Vargas is deluded in his belief that if he can force eternal happiness and hope in his subjects through continual [[celebration]]s and festivals, this will protect the town from Strahd's influence. The jaded townsfolk do not agree.<ref name="Curse of Strahd p. 95">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 95</ref>

==Relationships==
Baron Vargas is [[married]] to [[Lydia Petrovna]]. Though not evil herself, she has bought into Vargas' foolish doctrine. On the other hand, Vargas and his son, [[Victor Vallakovich]], are estranged from each other. Victor mostly evades the attention of his parent, holding himself up creating a way out of [[Barovia]]. [[Izek Strazni]] is Vargas' personal [[enforcer]], as the baron took the shunned [[outcast]] in off of the street.<ref name="CoS p 105">CoS p. 105</ref>

Though Vargas is not well-liked, there are two figures in particular that are not friendly with him. [[Udo Lukovich]], a local [[cobbler]], publicly criticized him; Vargas [[imprisoned]] Udo in retalation.<ref name="CoS p. 107">CoS p. 107</ref> Though Udo is hardly significant, [[Lady Fiona Wachter]], an influential member of the [[Wachter Family]], is a true enemy but for an entirely different reason than Vargas' bullying. He mostly avoids the attention of his parents (especially his condescending father) to study [[wizard]]ry alone in the attic of his family mansion.<ref name="Curse of Strahd p. 105">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 105</ref>

At one point, Victor discovered a [[spellbook]] in the [[library]] of his father and used it to teach himself magic. As in [[life]], Marilena is a [[manipulator]] and has a black soul just as much as the burgomaster she professed to love. She haunted [[Fidatov Manor]], bound by a [[curse]] she herself laid. By day, she appears much as a normal mortal, but by [[night]] she takes on a nightmarish transformation with the rest of the manor. It is only during the nighttime that she can be permanently destroyed.<ref name="The Tempter p. 8">[[The Tempter]] p. 8</ref>

==History==
Marilena and Ivan became lovers just to exploit each other. Marilena eventually grew skeptical about Ivan's faithfulness and verified her suspicions with a reading of the [[tarokka]]. She broke off their relationship, earning Ivan's wrath. During a gala ball, he employed a [[bribed]] [[servant]] to poison her food. As she died, Marilena called to [[the Dark Powers]] to ensure nobody else benefit from her [[estate]].<ref name="The Tempter p. 8">[[The Tempter]] p. 8</ref>

The Dark Powers responded to Marilena's plea by placing a powerful and horrific [[curse]] upon Fidatov Manor and its inhabitants. By day, they would experience again their final hours just prior to death. By night, they would experience a ghoulish transformation, in which the [[soulless]] [[Barovian]]s transformed into vile undead while those with [[soul]]s became [[wererat]]s. The manor took became warped and decayed each night. The next morning, everything revert back, nobody holding any memories of the transformation. Marilena Fidatov was the only exception. For a time, few visitors would come to Fidatov Manor, as the burgomaster forbade all travel to it.<ref name="The Tempter p. 8">[[The Tempter]] p. 8</ref> While guarding the wealth accumulated wealth, Marilena became funneling [[magic]] into a sorcery that enhanced Barovia's horrific [[winter]], though only slightly.<ref>The Tempter p. 21</ref>

Sometime before or after her death, Marilena was in contact with [[Costel Barbu]], the [[barber]] of [[Orașnou]], about a dangerous [[cannibal]] and [[murderer]] named [[Eugen Adi]]. Marilena sent Costel an invitation offering the Barbu family asylum at the mansion and a [[ring of spell-storing]] armed with a [[spell]] to protect him from Eugen. Sadly, it did not reach its destination in time for Costl to read it before Eugen ate him alive. Instead it fell into the hands of Costel's mentally impaired son, [[Luca Barbu]], whom could never read it.<ref>[[The Broken One]]</ref>

Eventually, the invitation fell into the hands of [[adventurer]]s. Burgomaster Ivan called them to visit the manor, in the hopes they might convince Marilena to give the village supplies to get through the winter.<ref>The Tempter p. 9</ref> The [[adventurer]]s confronted Marilena in her [[undead]] form<ref>The Tempter p. 14-19</ref> and ultimately destroyed her.<ref>[[The Artifact]] p.5</ref> With her death, the other unnatural inhabitants of the manor stayed [[deceased]], and the manor no longer changed appearances. Denied in life the support and approval of his [[dragon]] father, It was easy for Esmae Amarantha to manipulate him into becoming one of her elite agents known to her as [[the Obsessions]]. He was tasked with finding [[Tatyana's Gloves|Tatyana's gloves]].<ref>[[The Innocent]] p. 7-8</ref>

==History==
Graxxygak is the son of the [[Faerunian]] dragon [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Throstulgrael Throstulgrael] and a troll mother. Graxxygak venerated his his father, but the dragon- now a [[dracolich]]- did not give Graxxygak much heed. [[Adventurer]]s intruding upon Throstulgrael's lair slew Graxxygak, but the half-dragon troll rose again as a [[ghost]], hoping to find the appreciation in [[undeath]] denied to him in [[life]].<ref name="The Innocent p. 7">The Innocent p. 7</ref> This is not to say that Graxxygak had no admirers- somewhere in life or undeath he gained at least two normal [[troll]] followers.<ref name="The Innocent p. 10">The Innocent p. 10</ref> However, Graxxygak seemingly held an unusually strong need- perhaps even [[obsession]]- to fill the void in his heart.<ref name="The Darklord p. 8">[[The Darklord]] p. 8</ref> To make matters worse, becoming a ghost rendered a shift from a fierce personality to an uncertain and apprehensive one.<ref name="the Innocent p. 8">The Innocent p. 8</ref> In essence, Graxxygak was a suffering creature without direction in life.<ref name="The Darklord p. 8">[[The Darklord]] p. 8</ref>

Graxxygak eventually was eventually drawn to the Land of Mists- in specific, [[Barovia]]. There he was discovered by Esmae Amarantha, the most powerful of the [[Barovian Witch]]es. Graxxygak's misery left him in a state vulnerable to [[manipulation]]- a fact that Esmae keenly recognized. Esmae exploited Graxxygak's obsession to put him to work in the service of her own- that of winning [[Strahd]]'s heart by transforming into an [[immortal]] incarnation of [[Tatyana Federovna]]. Esmae tasked Graxxygak with finding [[Tatyana's Gloves|the gloves formerly worn by Tatyana]].<ref>The Darklord p. 7-8</ref>

Graxxygak's pursuit of his given mission grew into a full obsession with all [[glove]]s, to which he began hoarding.<ref name="The Innocent p. 10">The Innocent p. 10</ref> Although an [[incorporeal]] being, Graxxygak could manipulate objects via [[telekinesis]]. In fact, since coming to Ravenloft, Graxxygak's telekinetic ability was enhanced- [[dark gift|a gift]] from [[the Dark Powers]] allowed Graxxygak to use his telekinesis from the [[Ethereal Plane]]. Moreover, that same dark gift allowed him to use his [[possession]] ability from the Ethereal Plane.<ref name="the Innocent p. 8">The Innocent p. 8</ref>

Graxxygak eventually located Tatyana's gloves in the town of [[Orașnou]], in the hands of a woman named [[Sari Florica]]. Uncertain of how to seize the gloves without drawing attention, Graxxygak delayed acting until another enigmatic being known only as [[the Visitor]] came into the picture.<ref name="the Innocent p. 8">The Innocent p. 8</ref> Like Esmae, the Visitor was a skilled [[manipulator]] whose interest was also in taking control of Graxxygak- though by appealing to the Dark Powers rather than Graxxygak himself. To this end, the Visitor believed he would gain control over Graxxygak with the proper [[sacrifice]]. To this end, the Visitor took an interest in Sari<ref name="The Innocent p. 7">The Innocent p. 7</ref>

From this fiend, individuals can be granted in this life their heart's desires. This gave Inajira the opportunity to both wreak horrible revenge upon Strahd. In addition, Inajira hoped to retrieve the [[Book of Keeping]] (see below) that Strahd had conned Inajira into lending him.<ref name=gaz1p142>[[Ravenloft Gazetteer Volume I]], p. 142.</ref> (Without his Book of Keeping, Inajira was an [[exile]] from his home in [[Gehenna]]. The name of this fiend is sometimes recorded as ''Ijrail'' or ''Inraji'', such as the legends of the [[Terg]]s calling a [[fiend]] to send after then General Strahd.
