In many ways it seems a festive figure, dressed in the green, brown and red garb of a minstrel, a long-nosed mask, and broad-brimmed, feathered hat. The creature ignores all other creatures on its long journeys, responding with a sudden, vicious attack only if others interfere with its sack or mask. He searches for a house where happy children are present, and where the precautions (ring of salt around the house, blocking the chimney) have not been taken. Note: While all of the above is netbook-canon only, Fanton was listed among the bogeymen in [[Dark Tales & Disturbing Legends]], a canon resource. A [[tiger]]-like [[caliban]]. [[Shih Suren]] is the son of a [[samurai]] couple from [[Rokushima Táiyoo]] whom were [[cursed]] by a [[weretiger|weretigress]] for killing her and thus dooming her cub. His parents [[abandoned]] him in the [[forest]]. However, he was saved and raised by [[kami]]. When he was old enough to go back home, his father challenged him to a duel of honor. Shih won, at the cost of his father's life. Shih was thus [[exiled]] into the [[Poison Sea]]. From there, he drifted into [[Darkon]]. From there, he has become an [[adventurer]], meeting companions that have helped (somewhat) to tame the inner beast within him.<ref>[[Heroes of Light]] p. 82-83</ref>

Shih Shuren takes out his anger and hatred on [[necromancer]]s and the [[undead]], for which he feels are especially unclean. Recently he has uncovered a particularly [[evil]] practitioner of the black arts, [[Lord Erexen Winterhand]]<ref>[[Heroes of Light]] p.84</ref>

Dr. van Richten makes a notable appearance in the [[5th Edition]] [[module]], [[Curse of Strahd]], though not in his [[famous]] persona as the monster hunter and [[writer]] of the [[Van Richten's Guide]]s he is notable for in previous Ravenloft products. Instead, he adopts the guise of [[Rictavio]], a traveling [[half-elf]] [[bard]], [[storyteller]], and [[ringmaster]] gathering stories and watching out for talent. In reality he is gathering formation and waiting for an optimal time to strike at [[Strahd]], preferably when the vampire lord is in [[hibernation]]. Unlike other versions of van Richten, the Curse of Strahd van Richten is a [[loner]] because he knows the full extent of his [[curse]].<ref name="Curse of Strahd">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 238</ref>

==History==
Much of Dr. van Richten's early history before he came a monster hunter remains the same. One key difference is that he did not wholesale murder the [[Vistani]] that [[kidnapped]] his son [[Erasmus van Richten]]. In fact, one of them, [[Ezmerelda d'Avenir]] appeared to him one day and expressed her remorse, eventually becoming van Richten's student in monster hunting. However, their relationship frayed after a couple of years, and at, Ezmerelda's suggestion, they left each other's company amicably.<ref name="CoS p. 230-231">CoS p. 230-231</ref>

At some point in his adventuring career, a [[Vistani]] [[seer]] [[cursed]] van Richten, dooming his friends to die. ''Curse of Strahd'' is not specific to when in his adventuring career or why van Richten's curse was put upon him, though he is aware of it.<ref name="Curse of Strahd">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 238</ref> In contrast, in the traditional van Richten story, van Richten is [[cursed]] by [[Madame Radanavich]] early on in his career but does not realize how it has effected him until [[741 BC]] (the year before he retires). He thus operates as a [[loner]], to not cause the death of any friends or allies he would work with.<ref name="Curse of Strahd">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 238</ref>

Eventually, Dr. van Richten set his sights upon the destruction of Strahd. By now having adopted the identity of Rictavio, van Richten eventually encountered [[Yan]], an [[exile]]d [[Vistani]]. Once Yan discovered van Richten's intentions to go to [[Barovia]] and seek out the Vistani there, Yan tried to make off with [[Rictavio's Wagon]] along with [[Piccolo]]. Van Richten caught him and [[killed]] the [[thief]], removed his head, and preserved it with special magic oils to be used with [[speak with dead]] later on.<ref>CoS p. 171</ref>

Rictavio came to [[Barovia]] in the guise of [[Rictavio]]<ref name="Curse of Strahd">[[Curse of Strahd]] p. 238</ref> and set up shop at a then [[abandoned]] tower formerly belonging to the [[wizard]] [[Khazan]]. Dr. van Richten made [[Van Richten's Tower|Khazan's old tower]] his own for a time, before moving on to [[Vallaki]] and setting up shop there.<ref name="CoS p. 167">CoS p. 167</ref> In the meantime, Ezmerelda heard [[rumor]]s about her former mentor's travel to [[Barovia]] to take out Strahd, and she traveled to Barovia to find van Richten, eventually setting up shop in his old tower.<ref>CoS p. 231</ref>

About a month prior to the current point in the timeline of the module, "Rictavio" came to Vallaki. There he met and purchased a [[doll]] of a [[Vistani]] from [[Gadof Blinsky]]. Noting the toymaker's loneliness and despair, van Richten left his [[pet]] [[monkey]], [[Piccolo]] with Blinsky for company.<ref name="Curse of Strahd p. 118">CoS p. 118</ref> Dr. van Richten has stayed at the [[Blue Water Inn]] and received generous treatment from the charitable [[Urwin Martikov]].<ref>CoS p. 100</ref>. Van Richten drives [[Rictavio's Carnival wagon|a carnival wagon]]<ref>CoS p. 115-116</ref> pulled by a [[horse]]] named [[Drusilla (Horse)|Drusilla]].<ref>CoS p. 101-102</ref> Dr. van Richten uses [[Rictavio's saber-toothed tiger|his sabre-toothed tiger]] to hunt [[evil]] [[Vistani]], for which it is especially trained to do.<ref name="CoS p. 115-116">CoS p. 115-116</ref> Currently, van Richten is gathering information on both a)the [[Keepers of the Feather]] to learn their allegiances/membership and b)the [[evil]] [[Vistani]] of [[Arrigal's Clan]] at the [[Vistani camp near Vallaki]]. ==Emergence and Azalin==
A feudal fantasy nation ruled over by the [[lich]]-[[king]] [[Azalin Rex]], '''Darkon''' is the largest domain in [[Ravenloft]]. Physically, it takes up the northern third of the main continent, the [[Core]], and its population easily exceeds that of any other single domain. Politically, Darkon is stable but not very influential, with its various nobles kept in check by Azalin's machinations.

In a real sense, Darkon's history is Azalin's history. After being driven out of his original homeland and finding himself in Ravenloft, Azal'Lan (originally a title meaning simply "Wizard King") was briefly befriended by [[Strahd von Zarovich]], the darklord of [[Barovia]]. They were experimenting with a few magic spells to help each other escape until eventually Azalin gave up, and wandered into Darkon. After leaving, Azalin found himself the master of a sprawling domain that reflected his cruelty, his obsession with order, his cunning, and his greatest frustration: the inability to learn new magic.

Due to Azalin's desire for unswerving loyalty, Darkon has the most obvious and unique curse in Ravenloft. After spending from one to three months within its borders, anyone not native to Darkon loses all memory of their original homeland, instead believing themselves to have always lived in Darkon. Additionally, they lose all personal desire to leave the country, though some do so anyway out of necessity or circumstance. The memories include a whole new life history and victim often adopt gravestones at the local cemeteries as graves of their ancestors. The lost memories return upon leaving the domain. In [[From the Shadows]], it is shown that their memories are magically recorded in a book in a [[library (Avernus) | library]] in [[Avernus]].

||This feature leads some to believe that Darkon is an unsuitable realm for an outsiders-based campaign. Some players have experimented with campaigns of rediscovery, where the players have no clue as to their "real" histories but can discover them through investigation. (Inspired by the movie ''Memento'' and the video game ''Planescape: Torment''.)

Some possible workarounds exist, but these involve doctoring the books in the [[library (Avernus) | library]]. As a plot device, it is possible that [[Azalin]] may bargain with powerful outsiders to restore their memories in exchange for a service. For low-level characters, another potential plot device is to have a "finder's agency" investigate their lost memories, which could uncover many events in neighboring Ravenloft domains. Also, the aimless vulnerability of individuals newly mind-wiped lends itself to interesting slavery or gang-related plots.

Azalin's desire to escape Ravenloft led to the disastrous [[Grand Conjunction]] in [[740]] Barovian Calendar, nearly destroying the [[Demiplane of Dread]]. His next escape attempt resulted in the equally catastrophic [[Requiem]], destroying his physical form and turning the capital city of Darkon, [[Il Aluk]], into a city of the undead, now called [[Necropolis]]. For the five years of Azalin's disappearance, Darkon itself was known as Necropolis due to the influence of that city's [[darklord]], Death. Azalin was restored to his body and his throne in time, and now plots a third escape attempt, the details of which are unknown.

Darkon is one of the few domains of Ravenloft to accept demihumans such as elves and dwarves as equal citizens, and one of the few to embrace arcane magic openly. Darkon is often considered decadent by its neighbors, appropriate enough as Azalin encourages his citizens to debase themselves as a means of salving his own ego.

So, why is this domain considered to be based on Renaissance France? The language is French-based, yes, but honestly the feel I get for it is more reminiscent of Victorian England; haughty, arrogant, technologically advanced... the abundance of mind manipulators reminds me of various "penny dreadful" stories; the mysterious mastermind weaving tendrils of deception and illusion just feels like a very Victorian England "pulp" sort of story. Yeah, I think that decision was influenced more by the language than anything else, but there's also the resistance to basing anything on England, it being the vanilla of fantasy settings. Aurek Nuikin is a character from [[Scholar of Decay]]<ref>[[Scholar of Decay]], throughout</ref>. In universe, he is a [[Borcan]] nobleman. He is the brother of [[Dmitri Nuikin]] by almost 15 years and the husband of the now late [[Natalia Nuikin]]. Once an [[intellectual]] who values [[knowledge]] only for [[knowledge]], that changed when an accident during a [[robbery]] left his wife trapped in the form of a small statuette. Following this development, he ventured to [[Richemulot]], where he and Dmitri fell afoul of [[Louise Renier]]'s machinations to take down [[Jacqueline Renier]]. The plot failed, but it ended disastrously for everyone.

==Biography==
Prior to the accident, Aurek was a [[scholar]] who cared only for knowledge and theory, not actually applying it to the betterment of the world despite Natalia's objections. He compiled a [[spellbook]] of a hundred [[spell]]s, even [[combat]] ones despite being an academic. He lived in the [[Nuikin Family Estate]] in the Borcan countryside with his wife and his [[loyal]] [[servant]], [[Edik]]. Back in the city, his four sisters spoke highly of his work, to the point of Dmitri's chagrin. To Aurek, Dmitri represented an undisciplined, uneducated fool. The two brothers did not get along together. One night a [[thief]] attempted to steal Aurek's spellbook, only to cause an explosion of magical energy in the scuffle. The thief was vaporized but so was the spellbook. Worse, Aurek's wife was [[transformed]] into a small porcelain figurine, and Aurek was continually [[haunted]] by the spirit of the intruder.

Pretending to be only a scholar, Aurek visited Richemulot and was granted permission to explore the many old wrecked [[house]]s of that land. In truth, he hoped to find some long lost magical spell or bauble there to free Natalia. He told nobody about this secret, even Edik. As far as what everyone else knew, Aurek made sure only he and the persistent haunt dogging him in every [[reflection]] knew.

Because of Dmitri's offense of [[Ivana Boritsi]], his sisters insisted Aurek take Dmitri with him. In Richemulot, their estrangement grew, fueled by Eurek's arrogance and secretiveness on the one hand and Dmitri's angry naivety on the other. Dmitri also fell in with the wrong crowd: [[Louise Renier]] pretended to love him and [[Yves Milette's clique|a small clique of the Renier family]] pretended to be his friends. Ultimately, Louise used Dmitri to discover the nature of Aurek in the hopes of using him as a weapon against Jacqueline. Louise even [[manipulated]] Dmitri into stealing Natalia's statuette and delivering it to her. From there, Louise [[extorted]] Aurek into helping her kill Jacqueline.

Louise' plot failed, but things ended up disastrously for everyone. Natalia's statuette was shattered, and Dmitri learned both of how he had been [[deceived]] and the weighty implications of his actions. Jacqueline [[exile]]d them both from Richemulot and provided them transport to the [[border]].

As the plan degenerated and a scuffle broke out, Natalia was knocked ot the ground and shattered, denying Aurek a way of restoring life to her.

[[Shadow Unicorn]]s are an evil type of [[magical beast]] native to [[Ravenloft (Setting)|Ravenloft]], and the legend is that they were sired by [[Addar]]--a true [[unicorn]]--and a female [[nightmare]]. They are endemic to the forests of [[Darkon]] and [[Falkovnia]].<ref name=DenDred>[[Denizens of Dread]] p.195</ref> When Shadow Unicorns mate, the resulting offspring are always twin foals with a tiny chance that one of the foals may grow to become a true unicorn. The [[Vistani]] know enough about the creature to pacify them when they journey through the shadow unicorn's territory. They are known to enjoy the taste of [[Dread Treants]].

Like those who came before him, he found a journal and spellbook of one of the members of a previous incarnation of the Brotherhood. Alec Lawrence is both a skilled [[scientist]] and a [[necromancer]] (the most adept necromancer of the Brotherhood). He has created a number of unique abominations, including [[scientific zombie]]s, [[the Huskless]], [[the Knarled]], and [[Alec's harpies]].<ref>[[The Book of Sorrows]] p. 15-23</ref>

It also says later that in the course of two years, he killed 18 people; it is unclear whether this is intended to describe the height of his murder spree, or to give an totally different span and number of victims.

Also, it is worth noting that he underwent considerable reform under Illhousen's care, to the point where his violent moods had all but disappeared, and he no longer desired to strangle anyone, until the Nightmare Court tortured him in his dreams and promised him peace only if he killed Illhousen's allies.

"Henrik" Dominiani? Just caught that in Gaz 1. So he has a fake first name, too? That blows apart the idea that "Dr. Dominiani" was a nickname inspired by/alluding to his methods. I always thought it was the Gundarakite equivalent of "Dr. Pain," as in it was obvious he was a monster. You know, like a wrestler name. Now with the first name Henrik, it appears this is supposed to be a full alias, nothing suspicious about it. Also, any idea on which of these is his public name and which is his private one? Former servant of [[Duke Gundar]], Daclaud Heinfroth conspired with his master against [[Harkon Lukas]], seducing Harkon's daughter [[Akriel Lukas|Akriel]] to seek out the Crown of Souls. When that failed due to the intervention of heroes, he betrayed his master in 736, becoming darklord of [[Gundarak]]. After the Grand Conjunction, he was granted his own domain, Dominia, where he currently resides in the his [[Asylum for the Mentally Disturbed]].

In life a gifted alienist seeking a cure for his family's hereditary madness, Heinfroth accidentally became a [[Cerebral Vampire]] after tranfusing himself with the cerebrospinal fluid of one of Gundar's would-be brides. As cerebral vampires cannot make more of their own kind like other vampires can, he holds the secrets to creating more of them.

The daughter of [[General Falkfuhrer Pol Amarant]] of [[Stangengrad Military Academy]], Anika grew up wealthy and wanting for nothing. Until her early 20s, she was considered by many to be an aristocratic, spoiled snob--if highly skilled in business, trade, and diplomacy. That changed however one day when she witnessed brutality at its worst -- the slaying of her younger brother by an unidentified killer. After that, she realized how dire the situation was in her homeland and that she needed a purpose beyond being a mere aristocrat, but she also knew that vengeance would help nothing. This led her to learning the specialist ways of the courtier in order to further allow her to aid others (and of course herself), and later at the age of 23, to join the women's empowerment and military team of [[Kara's Daughters]].

Over the next 2 years, Anika gained a reputation for skillful diplomacy and persuasion throughout Falkovnia and even into some surrounding countries. This aided her when the time of the [[Census Day attack]] came upon them, and [[Kara Drakov]] was in danger. Kara had suffered a breakdown after possession by a doppelganger ghost, and the only offer of help turned out to be a [[vampyre]] plot. Anika and other Daughters managed to get Kara out of [[Falkovnia]] to an [[oneirologists|Oneiromancer]] named [[Karl Bauer]] in [[Lamordia]]. Because of Anika's bravery, Kara was recently able to return to Falkovnia and, with a plea to [[Vlad Drakov|her father]], maintained her citizenship and was restored to her rightful place.

While in snow storm-ridden [[Lamordia]], however, Anika spotted an injured and sick young snow owl that had been afflicted by presence of the [[White Fiend]]. This awoke something in Anika and, taking the owl into her care as a friend, she now is learning the path of the [[ranger]] in order to better aid her country and fellow sisters of Kara's Daughters.<ref>[[Kara's Daughters (Campaign)]]</ref>
