Frederick is a human ex-pat from Falkovnia. Well, he was. He was part of the crew for Captain Johnny Beetlefoot's Jolly Mongrel, eventually becoming its first mate. As first mate, he took his task of keeping the crew in line like a fish to water. A little too well. He was known for the vicious beatings he gave if the crew got out of line. He revealed in his lust for punishment. This lust drew the dark powers attention, who slowly made him crave more and more blood and flesh from those he beat.

When a crewman killed another, Frederick took to the punishment not angrily, but gleefully. He beat the murderer within an inch of his life, then tied him upside-down to the mast and began to flay him with a whip, strips of his flesh being ripped off. Frederick, overcome with hunger for punishment, succumbed to the dark powers temptation and ripped apart the crewman, devouring his flesh with his hands and teeth, to the horror of the crew. Captain Beetlefoot had no other choice but to punish his first mate himself. Frederick was tied to the anchor and sent to the bottom of the ocean.

Whatever cruel fate may have it, this did not kill Frederick. Or perhaps more accurately, it DID kill Frederick, but his soul did not depart. The dark powers had their hooks in him and would not release their new plaything so easily. Three days tied to the anchor, Frederick was pulled up, transformed into a sea-ghoul.

Frederick now struggles with his undead nature, and hunger. He was given a second chance by the powers that be, and he refuses to give in so easily to their plans. He can easily pass as living in the world around him as long as he covers up his barnacled skin, seaweed like hair, and curved claws. He has a slightly off look to him, with his greenish tinted hair always wet and pulled back, a sea-green bandana covering his falcon-marked forehead. He runs the Golden Hand Finder's Shoppe in Fallaya with Johnny Beetlefoot and a handful of other former mates of the Jolly Mongrel. He is a surprisingly jovial sort, and hides the fact that he is undead incredibly well, though how long he can keep his hunger at bay with raw fish and chickens is uncertain.

Statistics
Frederick is a Neutral Good 11th-level sea-ghoul fighter. He is a master swordsman, though he is mostly retired from that line of work now, his great sword Nios hanging on the wall of the Finder's Shoppe.

Nios is a magical greatsword +2 with a few unique abilities. Its blade is made of wrought iron, and is covered in barnacles with a red and black pearl set into the blade about two inches above the hilt.

He eventually became captain of his own vessel, the Jolly Mongrel, and traversed the seas of the world. Captain Johnny Beetlefoot realized what was happening just before it was too late, and has worked himself back from the brink of total corruption, though the marks of his sins still show: a coarse red beard, golden eyes, and his left hand made entirely of glitterdust.

The Jolly Mongrel was one of the first ships to find its way to the Fallaya Basin. And here, Captain Johnny retired from seafaring and set up shop with his first mate, Frederick, a dwarven rhabdomere Corso Bladesmith and their man-servant Tarot. His unique abilities, cursed on him by the dark powers for his greed, now gave him skills to search the depths and his own bravado the fuel he needs to enter dangerous haunts like Flood Town. For the right price, Johnny Beetlefoot's the Golden Hand "finder's shop" will search the entire known world for whatever it is they are paid to find. * He can will someone to dance Otto's Irresistible Dance 3/day
Though all of this comes with a price. The touch of coins burns Johnny. The more valuable the coin, the more dangerous, to the point where death from a single gold coin is not out of question.

Introduction
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.
Temporal Ruler
There is no ruler of the Basin as a whole, though some within the Basin have carved out territories that they control:

*A secret society within Fallaya of druids that seek to find the key to controlling the Swamp Shambler.
*Beauregard DuBlon, a were-crocodile thug that prowls the waterways and roads
*Djorji Herne, a darkling alchemist cursed to transform into a heron during the day and is a man every evening until sunrise. He searches for a cure for his affliction, believing the Shambler can lead him to the natural ingredients needed to make him fully human again.
*"Mayor" Redd rules the criminal haven of Flood Town unopposed.
*The Golden Hand is a "finder's shop" based in Fallaya run by a curious retired gnome pirate, Johnny Beetlefoot, who claims that they can and will find anything, if the fee is right.
* The Swamp Shambler searches for a woman in a vague understanding of marriage. Periodically women are abducted from the roads and waterways, and sometimes from the streets of Fallaya itself, to be lost within the swamps forever, or even worse, to become the Shambler's bride. Young women are warned to never sing as they pass between Fallaya and other towns for fear the Shambler will hear.

* Rumor has it there is a music box, lost somewhere within the moors of the Basic, that can control the Swamp Shambler itself.

* A collector from the Core of fine art has heard rumor of many lost pieces of art in Flood Town and is willing to pay heavily for these objects to be transported back, if they do exist.

* "Mayor" Redd is growing restless with his town of criminals, and has his sights set on Fallaya. He wants to sink it as well, and is looking to find a way to anger the Swamp Shambler enough to do it for him.
The Jolly Mongrel was one of the first ships to find its way to the Fallaya Basin. And here, Captain Johnny retired from seafaring and set up shop with his first mate, Frederick, and their man-servant Tarot. For a better price, he'll search beyond the known world.
Johnny Beetlefoot is a Neutral Good 9th-level/9th-level, gnome thief/illusionist. He has a handful of unique abilities, "gifts" from the dark powers:

* He can transform himself into a cloud of glitterdust 3/day
* He can will someone to dance Otto's Irresistible Dance 3/day
Though all of this comes with a price. The touch of coins burns Johnny. The more valuable the coin, the more dangerous, to the point where death from a single gold coin is not out of question.

Once a con-gnome in Darkon, Johnny Beetlefoot is an odd gnome, which in and of itself is a strange thing to think of. He used his knowledge of illusions and his own vast strength un-befitting his size to dupe marks into buying his strength potions. He was eventually run out of Martira Bay and forced to join the crew of the Winter Rose.

He eventually became captain of his own vessel, the Jolly Mongrel, and traversed the seas of the world. But his greed and duplicitous nature caught the attention of darker powers, who took him down a terrible path, giving him everything he wished for ... as long as he paid the price with gold. Captain Johnny Beetlefoot realized what was happening just before it was too late, and has worked himself back from the brink of total corruption, though the marks of his sins still show: a coarse red beard, golden eyes, and his left hand made entirely of glitterdust.

Flood Town is a lawless wasteland of a city sunken within the Fallaya Basin swamps. It was once Ngethuat, a thriving town in Fallaya, before it was absorbed by the mists, and was the place to go for art, theatre, and music. When Fallaya Basin was absorbed into the Hub, Ngethuat was hit with a huge rainstorm that flooded the town and made it sink into the mire about 15 feet. Abandoned and renamed Flood Town, it became a skeleton of a great city.

Now Flood Town is a sunken mess. Thieves, homeless, lepers, crazy men, and others unfit for normal society have flocked here, in a mockery of the beautiful Flood Town used to be. The "mayor" of Flood Town is Redd, who uses his Swamp Rat goons to bully, steal, and push around everyone in Flood Town and the surrounding homes just trying to survive on the waterways.

Darklord of Fallaya Basin. The "Swamp Shambler" is the nickname given to the mythical monster that lives in the swamp and kills the unlucky. It is the name adopted by the land of Fallaya Basin when it takes a physical form, for in The Basin the very ground beneath your feet may be the enemy.

Netbook-canon

Background
After the foetid marsh of Fallaya Basin claimed an innocent traveller the very ground was cursed by his family. The land was never to know happiness, only despair, to never be a home, only an empty place. No longer heartless nature, the land now knew what it had done, now knew the suffering it had caused. And it did not care.

Current Sketch
The Swamp Shambler is truly tragic. With its wandering nature as the personification of the Basin itself, it is simple. And wrathful. Many within the Basin seek ways to control the Shambler for their own purposes, but all their plans only lead to ruin, as no man can control the full brunt of nature.

Curse
Wants civilization: art, culture, music. But trapped in a land where the only people are simple, crude folk.

Combat
When the swamp takes a humanoid form it appears as a shambling mound.
