Shalkala are said to be a type of [[Barovian]] [[fey]] asking as [[tempter]]s of men, attempting to trick men into following them into the [[forest]]. There, the shakala exhort their thralls into [[dance]]s within rings of [[fungus]] or [[moss]]. Those foolish enough to partake in such dances find their memories altered such that the affected men think the shakala are their close companions. Those afflicted by memory alteration serve the shakala as trusted guardians for the rest of their mortal lives.<ref>[[Van Richten's Guide to the Mists (Book)]] p. 39</ref>
