They became reclusive shut-ins after [[the Sea Witch]] [[cursed]] the land and its people with barrenness. Later, [[the oblex\|an oblex]], a sinister and intelligent [[ooze]], [[killed]] both Ashmore and his wife. The oblex was eventually to create an oozey [[clone]] of Ashmore and what seemed to be his son, causing the Keeper's few visitors to come with stories that Ashmore had escaped [[the Sea Witch's Curse]].
