==Background==
A precocious [[child]], Victoria took after her father, [[Emile von Lendstein]], in seeking the skills to become a [[physician]]. After being chased out of the local university because of her gender, she was taught directly by her father. After Emile's death in a [[fire]], Victoria became convinced it was more than an accident, but the local authorities found no evidence. Convinced she and her father were the targets of a [[conspiracy]] committed by [[agent]]s of the university, Victoria was determined to defy them by achieving the impossible: the [[resurrection]] of the [[deceased]].<ref>p. 8-9</ref>

In truth, Victoria had become a victim of the [[Frankenstein Papers]], a [[cursed]] medical text that implanted an [[obsession]] to create a [[dread flesh golem]] inside her mind. However, like [[Frankenstein]] centuries before, once she had finished her work, she was overcome with [[horror]] and [[shame]] and [[abandoned]] her [[dread construct]]. Following her escape, Victoria went to stay with her uncle and aunt, [[Albrecht von Thresher]] and [[Elise von Thresher]]. She also eventually fell in love with [[Gustav von Rudiger]]. Unfortunately, after Gustav and Victoria became [[engaged]], Udo came looking for her. He demanded her to marry him instead of Gustav, else face the penalty of death for both of her and her lover.<ref>p. 10-11</ref> For her part, Victoria is desperate and thinks her only option is to arrange Udo's [[death]] or kill him herself.<ref name=p.12> p. 12</ref>
