Founded the The British Society for Paranormal Research in 1888 after the death of his wife and two of his children to vengeful ghosts. He recruited Edmund McSwain to help investigate these murders and later with the British Society of Paranormal Research.[1]
Sir McCarthy's daughter Lucretia McCarthy is a survivor of the ghosts' attacks, but she was physically aged to the point of enfeeblement. Her mind was also heavily traumatized, leaving her an invalid. Sir McCarthy had her hospitalized at Seward's Sanitarium in London. The Red Death had her freed and then transformed her into a Night Hag in order to strike back at Sir McCarthy. She keeps a lair beneath the Sanitarium.[2]
