The shield of Ezra is the granted power given to divine spellcasters in the Church of Ezra.[1][2] In 2nd Edition, it was given to members of the anchorite character class of 6th level or higher. Because this class does not exist in 3rd Edition, the shield of Ezra is the granted power Mist Domain (a spell domain exclusive to the Church of Ezra).[2] The shield forms a protective barrier around the body of mist depending upon the alignment of the spellcaster:
- Lawful Evil: protection against Mind-affecting spells and effects[2]
- Lawful Good: protection against metal weapons[1][2]
- Lawful Neutral: protection against nonmagical weapons[1][2]
- True Neutral: protection against physically damaging spells[1][2]
The shield can be maintained only for a short amount of time (several rounds) each day.[1][2]
In Church Dogma
A would-be bastion of a new Church sect must, along with five followers, manifest a new shield of Ezra in order to pass the Rite of Revelation. Failure to do so means that Ezra has not passed down divine revelation to the would-be prophet[3], thus marking him as a heretic.
