Kelpies are malicious, shapechanging[1][2] 
plants[1][3] or fey[4] 
that are encountered in or near bodies of water[1][3][4], whether they be inland[4] or the vast ocean.[1] A kelpie has spell-like abilities to charm humanoids and motivate them to draw near water, where the kelpie proceeds to drown them.[1][4]

He was a beautiful horse, tall and dapple-gray, with his long white tail and long white mane; but Marie looked into his great green eyes, and in them she saw herself drowning in Lake Duchamps, with the wild green kelp all around her.
