Before entering [[Ravenloft]], Stezen arranged many [[assassination]]s and sowed [[rebellion]] among the people of his homeland. [[King Oderic IX]] was beside himself, son consulted with [[King Oderic's Mistress|his mistress]], a skilled user the dark arts. She trapped a part of Stezen's soul into [[The Portrait of Marquis Stezen d'Polarno|a magical painting]], robbing him of much of his [[Charisma|magnetic personality]] and revealing his opportunistic to all. Marquis responded by [[poisoning]] the [[king]] and all of his family, drawing the Marquis into the strange [[Land of Mists]]. King Oderic IX was the ruler of (Prime Material) Ghastria until he was poisoned by Stezen D'Polarno. Before entering Ravenloft, Stezen arranged many assassinations and sowed rebellion among the people of his homeland. King Oderic IX was beside himself, son consulted with his mistress, a skilled user the dark arts. She trapped a part of Stezen's soul into a magical painting, robbing him of much of his magnetic personality and revealing his opportunistic to all. Marquis responded by poisoning the king and all of his family, drawing the Marquis into the strange Land of Mists. But it was not enough to yet earn him the full mantle of a darklord.[1]
