Marielle (Vistani)

Marielle is a main character in the short story Tales of Ravenloft: Dark Tryst. She was a member of Sergio's tribe. After she betrayed the tribe, she was stoned to death. Thereafter, she reanimated and became a member of Damius' tribe of the Vistani. She is the lover of Damius.

Background

Marielle lived life as a shunned outcast even as she lived in the same camp as her people. The daughter of a feared witch named Magda and a giomorgo named Sean, Marielle was herself feared for her own magical powers. Sergio, patriarch of her tribe, described magic, beyond the divination of the Vistani seer, as untrustworthy for its tendency to attract attention from unsavory forces. After Marielle's betrothed passed away, Sergio proclaimed he had died due to Marielle accidentally inflicting the evil eye upon him, and thus ensured Marielle would be forever alone among her tribe.

With the death of Magda and the exile of Sean, Marielle was left without direct blood relatives in the tribe. Marielle feared her own tribe would turn on her. It was under this atmosphere of fear and isolation that she came into contact with, and perhaps became entranced by, the mysterious man known as Damius. She eventually met the rest of his tribe, who seemingly welcomed her.

Damius claimed his tribe were cursed with infertility. They could only continue on if she were to draw a drop of blood from her friend Annelise's child. She complied, surreptitiously drawing the blood with a ring containing a hidden barb. She returned and laid with Damius for a time.

When she awoke and returned to her own tribe, Annelise was screaming as her baby was reduced to a bloody husk. The tribe became an angry mob and surrounded their transgressor, stoning her to death. The Mists surrounded her bloody form and delivered her to the new tribe she now belonged to, healed and transformed.
