The heretic is at once a believer of a religion that he or she has no intention of abandoning and a questioner of one or more of the tenets of that religion, at least as they are currently understood. A heretic is equally a doctrinal innovator and a doctrinal dissenter. Existing authority judges the heretic to be a rebel who dreams of leading a revolution and consequently declare him or her a religious criminal. The religious crime of the heretic is heresy, their beliefs and teachings are heretical. Heretics tend to meet gruesome ends. Rarely they give birth to new religions by ways of schisms.
