Grandmother Manuella is a highly respected (if very reclusive) healer and adviser in the community of Sweet Bay Village, having served these roles for many decades. Unknown to everyone else, she is a green hag.[1] She is responsible for cursing Gooma and Kyta.[2]

Like many hags, she was once human and even took on an adopted son named Gooma. In return for her kindness, she demanded that Gooma take care of her in her old age and not take on a romantic relationship. Nonetheless, Gooma eventually met a girl named Kyta from a far away village, and they fell in love.[3]
When Manuella discovered their relationship, she she and Gooma entered a violent before going their separate ways. Manuella accidentally fell victim to the perils of the swamp, but somehow her vitriolic rage preserved her and transformed her into a green hag. Once Manuella had risen from the swamp's depths, she followed Kyta back to her village. Waiting until Gooma was away fishing, Manuella attacked Kyta and murdered her before binding her spirit to the Cursed Tree.
