The Bowlyn is an invisible, ghost-like creature who haunts ships. It is the angry spirit of a sailor who has returned for vengeance.[1]
The Bowlyn acts like a poltergeist, staging accidents and wreaking havoc on the ship. It can stay invisible or manifest itself visibly as it so chooses. They do not manifest immediately, their spirits reappear around the anniversary of their death. A ship that is haunted by a bowlyn can permanently rid itself of the haunting via the desperate measure of running itself aground.[1]

Old Capp was singing in his whining voice in the galley, the same song he always sang, just as I had heard it every night on that long, miserable voyage to Rokushima Taiyoo. It was so familiar a sound that it was several minutes before I remembered we had buried him at sea--truth be told, that we had "buried" him alive, to keep the plague that had made him a living skeleton from taking hold in the ship and killing us all.
