Friedrich Kreutzer is something of a former necromancer[1] (or perhaps, more accurately, a spiritualist mage[2]) from Martira Bay. He lives with his wife Hilda Kreutzer. Though they have been adventurers, they prefer to avoid it and instead keep to writing and dispensing knowledge.[2]

Many decades ago, Friedrich was but a mere secretary and self-published poet (having authored the Quatrains of Loss).[3] Friedrich met both his future mentor in matters necromantic, Herman Von Schreck, and his future wife, Hilda Kreutzer, while lurking in the Graymoor Cemetery in the immediate vicinity of Il Aluk.[4][2]

Hilda and Friedrich were hired by Dr. Victor Mordenheim to restore Elise Mordenheim. Hilda was kidnapped by Adam but rescued by the combined efforts of Dr. Mordenheim, Friedrich, and the monster hunter Ivan Dragonov. After Dragonov and Adam had seemingly destroyed each other, Mordenheim attempted to force the Kreutzers to aid him in reviving Elise by transplanting her soul into the body of Ilisa Zsolty, a Vistani woman. Ilisa's own consciousness would be lost in the transfer, so Hilda forcefully declined Victor Mordenheim's offer. Adam was an unlikely savior in helping them to escape his creator's wrath.[2]

In their escape attempt, the Kreuzters became lost in the Mists after Hilda tried to cast a spell to help their flight. They wound up traveling through space and time into the modern timeline of Ravenloft, where they bought a cottage just on the exterior of Il Aluk. Fortunately, they were away at the time of when Il Aluk became Necropolis.[5]
