Dirk Penhallow is a character from Heaven's Bones. He is one of the Penhallow family and a descendant of Jaelle Vadoma. As one of Jaelle's Breed, Dirk was gifted with the ability to Curse. However, this ability caused his downfall, for he was cast out of the Penhallow family as a youth for causing the Weald Hole mine to collapse by wishing bad luck upon the family in a moment of anger.[1] In his adulthood, his cousin Artemis Donovan reconciled with him so they could team up and defeat Trueblood. Trueblood attempted to turn Dirk to his side, but the villain's callous murder of Dirk's beloved sister Claire Penhallow destroyed any chance of that. Just as Jaelle had done generations before, Dirk cast Trueblood out with a curse and stabbed him with the very same knife, though he was mortally injured by Trueblood in return.[2]
