To establish protection against the bandits along the Prince's Road and Vaere Bange Road, the Five Families each contributed some of their own personal guards to become Handelkonduktørs ("Trade Guards"). Merchant caravans may hire them, but their expense often leads merchants to look elsewhere for protection.[1]
