A boat, as opposed to a ship, is a somewhat relative and impercise matter. In terms of size and cargo capacity, a boat is said to be carriable by a ship. Equally, watercraft operating on freshwater, or apt to such operation, are typically classified as boats. The barge and the scow schooner are boats. Seaworthy craft such as the galleon, the fluyt, the carrack, and the caravel are ships.
