Tides are a phenomenon involving the mass displacement of sea water resulting in the complex cycles of rising and falling sea levels. Tides are governed by the lunar cycle and solar cycle. They are exploited by vessels in the lowest reach of navigable rivers and by ships making port or sailing back out to sea.
The Schlammholme Islets, formerly in the Sea of Nebligtode and now in the Nocturnal Sea, are separated from Graben Island only by the highest of fall and spring tides. L'ile de la Tempete in the Nocturnal Sea is subject to quite extreme tides. Curiously, the eastern end of the Vuchar River has become subject to tides that mirror those of the Nocturnal Sea in the wake of the Requiem.
