Some of the Anatal ancestors of modern day Grabenites practiced ritual strangling of their criminals and thralls and then threw them into the waters of the Aassumpf. If The Bog Pits of the Strangled Dread Possibility is in play, then these ritual sacrifices resulted in the (inadvertent) creation of the Ancient Dead from bog preservation. Of these, the majority with only Rank 1 Ancient Dead or Rank 2 Ancient Dead, with a few notable killers or traitors at Rank 3 Ancient Dead.[1]

Igil Wotanshand, a fanatical priest who committed suicide, is the most powerful of the Strangled. In delusion, he believes he became one of the Ascended and attempts to convince the Strangled around him that they are his war party in Valhalla[2]. (Most are loathe to listen to him, save for the ones he can command via his priestly power.[1] Meanwhile, the Flayed Rider is much more effective at enslaving the ancient dead around him, though he only does so to torture them.[3]
