In 2nd Edition, the eremite is a wizard who uses potions rather than spells. (In game terms, they "cast spells" by brewing potions.) Van Richten noted that sometimes eremites are confused with hags because of some overlapping habits and habitats. However, he distinguishes the two in that the former could be Good or Evil aligned and only had potion brewing abilities whereas hags are all but uniformly malicious and have several mystical abilities.[1]
The eremite is discussed by Dr. Rudolph van Richten in Van Richten's Monster Hunter's Compendium III and receives a short sidebar on mechanics there. A more detailed kit writeup is in Champions of the Mists.
For those that use Pathfinder rules, perhaps Eremites could use the Alchemist class from the Advanced Players Guide.
