Like the jackalwere[1], jackal lords are evil, jackal-like entities capable of shapechanging[2]. However, whereas jackalweres are magical beasts, jackal lords are monstrous humanoids. Although jackalweres are generally ferocious and brutal creatures that enjoy donning humanoid guises[1], jackal lords are frequently decided and sophisticated manipulators that enjoy the finer things in life while working from behind the scenes.[2] A jackal lord may polymorph into a jackal or disguise itself as a humanoid as per disguise self. When in their natural forms, jackal lords resemble appealing, lithe humanoids with jackal heads.[2]

Beyond shapechanging, jackal lords boast an array of unusual powers and abilities. A jackal lord can use a number of spell-like abilities, including shadow walk and suggestion. A jackal lord can communicate with and dominate jackals or other canine creatures. However, the most powerful power of a jackal lord is its ability to lay down a powerful curse upon their foes, transforming them into jackals.[2]

Jackal lords function as clerics of 8th level regarding divine spellcasting capability. They often venerate unusually dark takes on the deity Anubis, or may follow Set. Conversion of nonbelievers to their deities often serves as a goal in jackal lord machinations[2]

As with the jackals they resemble, jackal lords can be found in deserts, although jackal lords may also be found underground.[3] Within the Demiplane of Dread, they may be encountered in Har'Akir and the rest of the Amber Wastes.

Descriptive Text

"So, you've come for your lover," the sheikh growled, his eyes glowing like coals between the veil that covered his face and the turban that covered his head. "He has been my slave these seven years and more, so his debt to me is paid; but there is amusement to be had in a game of skill, is there not, m'lady? Let us set a wager; if you can know him when you see him, he is yours; if you do not, you...are mine."

"I will never forget his face," Asjanna replied. "Nothing in the wide world could cause me to mistake him for another."

"Let us hope you are correct," the sheikh replied courteously (but there was malice in his voice). "He is in the plaza with his fellow servants. Choose him out and he is yours."

As he spoke the sheikh drew back the curtain, and Asjanna rushed forward; but what was her astonishment and horror to see the plaza filled with jackals. At last she knew why the sheikh was so closely veiled, and why he had made the wager; and now both Abdul's life and her own depended on her choice.
