The Prince of Nova Vaasa rules Nova vaasa as a steward, the position of king being left empty in memory of past and faded greatness and in the hope of the return of that greatness in the future. The position is divided between the Five Families with the head of each ruling for five years according to a scheduled known as the Cycle of Stewards. Othmar Bolshnik, the current prince, has broken that cycle as part of his pretensions to kingship.
