A killer snuffs out the life of another being. Depending upon the identity of the killer, of the killed, and of the witnesses, the act of killing may, or may not, constitute a [[crime]]. For example, a [[lumberjack]] might think nothing of killing a tree; the [[state]] would agree with him so long as the tree was his to kill and as long as any consequent taxes were paid; a [[druid]] would agree with neither opinion and would, at a minimum, see any gratuitousness on the part of the lumberjack as a crime against nature. Killers are not whole species. Although marikith are known in Paridon as the shadow killers, they and all fellow generic creatures fail to meet the requirements. Killers are either named individuals or are categories of such individuals, who take one or more lives of at least some note. The swatting of house flies by Bryonna or the destruction of nests of cockroaches by vermin killers fails to meet the requirements. Lives of at least some note are those of NPCs. The Darklord of Bluetspur devouring the brain of Marcu Vasilis or executioners beheading individuals condemned to death for their crimes meets the requirements. Equally, lives of some note are those of generic creatures which in the circumstances of their deaths pose at least some danger to their killers. Old Singe poisoning to death the generic crewmen of the Sunset Empires meets the requirements. Assassins, mercenaries, soldiers, and big game hunters are likewise killers. Such are the difficulties of an adventurous life that it is all to easy become a killer. Still, adventurers are well advised to avoid becoming murderers. Every murderer is a killer, but not every killer is a murderer. It is in fact possible to become a killer yet retain one's innocence.
