A critic offers a professional opinion, usually written, of creations in one or more of the fields of art. A literary critic passes judgement on literature. A theater critic passes judgement on plays. Critics are expected to be extremely knowledgable of fields in which they offer criticism. Ideally, they have also done work in those fields, lest they be accused of being "armchair critics". Artists need critics but often have little love for them. And critics need artists but are often jealous of them. It is a love-hate relationship.
