One of the Umbra, the highest-ranking members of the Fraternity of Shadows. He is also a leading professor and the president of the University of Dementlieu in Port-a-Lucine.[1]
His wife, Lady Cassilda de Casteelle, is five decades younger than himself. She is a talented sorcerer and a faculty member of the University of Dementlieu, presumably in the Department of Arcane Sciences. The pair reside with their two sons in the President's Mansion on the university campus.[2]

Lourd Balfour de Casteelle has corrsponded with both Dr. Van Richten and the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins.[4] He even wrote a chapter for Van Richten's Arsenal on magic items.[5] Of course, he peforms his "benevolent" actions to further his own agenda, particularly that of building contacts among adventurers and monster hunters.[1]
Lord Balfour has a doctorate degree in both Arcane Sciences and History.[6]
