Taught the secrets of how to make pacts with the Fair Folk by the Laginate Coven, several of Birne's ancient witch families entered an agreement with the Fair Folk of the forest, making regular sacrifices in return for agricultural prosperity. These families become the village's founding families, and they have existed in Birne for many generations. However, gradually the sacrifices have begun to loose their power unless humans have been sacrificed. The witches have been unable to keep up with the demand of the woodland spirits, therefore causing Birne's agricultural commodities to fail.[1]
