Note: This article covers a special type of undead called the Drowned. For a list of people who have drowned, see Drowned. For the type of malicious water fey fond of drowning humanoids, see Drownling.

The drowned are the undead remnants of those who perished underwater. They may have gone down in sunken ships or even lost their lives when their island or coastal homes were swallowed by the sea. Undeath has twisted them, leaving them infused with evil. A drowned radiates a drowning aura that fills the lungs of nearby unfortunates with water.[1]

It has been suggested that the drowned qualifies as an Obedient Dead according the Walking Dead typology in Van Richten's Guide to the Walking Dead.[2] This seems highly unlikely, as they seem to spontaneously arise. Rather, they seem more likely to be Restless Dead. Likelysalient abilities include Bending the Land, Berserk, Burning Touch, Corruptive Touch, Drowning Touch, and Mind of Many.[2]
