The heretic is at once a believer of a religion that he or she has no intention of abandonning and a questioner of one or more of the tenants of that religion, at least as they are currently understood. A heretic is a doctrinal innovator but it is equally a doctrinal dissent. Existing authority judges the heretic to be a rebel who dreams of leading a revolution. As such heretics tend to meet gruesome deaths.
