Tom is a Flesh Golem, created by Emil Bollenbach, at the request of Strahd von Zarovich. He was created as a trap for Lyssa von Zarovich, and his blood contains a poison that causes vampires who drink of it to fall into a deep slumber, and only slowly regain the ability to waken for more than a few hours each day.
