Klaus was murdered by Baron Gustav the Younger and now haunts him as a geist. However, given that Ingrid also haunts Gustav but yet she still lives[1]
both Ingrid and Klaus may simply be manifestations of the Dark Powers to torment Gustav rather than actual spirits of the dead.
See Gustav Baronial Family for a brief overview of Klaus' backstory or the article on Gustavstan in the Undead Sea Scrolls 2001 (p.82-87) for full details.
