Dread elementals (referred to as Ravenloft Elementals in 2nd Edition] products[1]) are elemental conjurations gone wrong (in 3rd Edition, spells of elemental calling). Every time a summoner attempts to call a normal elemental into the Demiplane of Dread, there is a chance that spell will spontaneously create a corrupted and macabre parody of the elemental. As spontaneous creations formed from the Demiplane's mists, they are not extraplanar creatures and therefore cannot be held back by Protection Against Evil spells. Moreover, when conjured by accident, dread elementals are free-willed and turn on their summoners. Such dread elementals always hope to kill their creators, for it is only then t hat these elemental spirits may rest in peace.[1][2]
