The Voice was a mysterious and sinister entity that engineered the murder of Benedek Durril and Sari Florica by Regold Durril. The Voice thought that through these murders he could gain control over Graxxygak, a powerful ghost. After that failed, the Voice attempted to get Regold to commit suicide as part of another ritual to gain control over Graxxygak.[1]
Supposedly an incubus and immortal[2], the Voice's actual abilities represent more a human wizard.[3] He used a Brass-Ring Spellbook and a Cape of the Mountebank.[4]
History
The Voice first came to Orașnou following the trail of Graxxygak. Despite being a newcomer in a rather xenophobic town, the Voice almost immediately gained the respect of the villagers. They commonly came to him seeking his advice and assistance. Two of these help-seekers were Benedek and Sari, two lovers engaged to be married. They sought his approval and benediction for their wedding. They did get his attention, though he held no benign feelings toward them.[1] Although the Voice may have held some infatuation for Sari[5], the Voice viewed both Sari and Benedek as good sacrifices for a ritual to bind Graxxygak.[1]
To achieve his goals, the Voice charmed Benedek's brother, Regold, and manipulated him into thinking Sari did not belong with Benedek. With envious wrath, Benedek murdered both Benedek and Sari. However, the Dark Powers deigned not to give the Voice the control over Graxxygak that the Voice sought. Instead, they would require a willing sacrifice- that is, a suicide. The guilt-ridden Regold, the Voice decided, would make for such a suitable sacrifice. He thus planned a second ritual of binding in the ancient yuan-ti Vault of the Royal Dead.[1]
Sari ultimately rose as a ghost. Though confused[6], she led adventurers to the Vault, whereupon they confronted the Voice and Graxxygak. Regold may or may not have died, and the ritual may or may not have succeeded. The Voice may or may not have been killed.[7]
