The Black Marsh is located within the Shadow RiftThe Black Marsh winds around the northern, eastern, and southern sides of drier areas of the Stonedowns.[1] Though areas of this salt-laden swamp bear more plant life (even all but suffocated by with) than the rest of the Stowndowns[2], all of the Black Marsh is dangerous thanks to the dangerous denizens, uncertain mires, and other terrors of the Marsh.[3] The incorporeal undead of the saugh are a particular danger here, for it is their favored haunting ground.[2][4] As a dread possibility, the Marsh itself may eat away at a person's psyche through melancholy, causing depression and eventual death by sinking into the Marsh's morass.[5] Like with the other areas of the Southern Rift, the Arak seldom go inside this noxious and despairing swamp.[6]

Several waterways feed into the Marsh, including the Grimfey Flow traveling north and the Nightrush traveling southeast.[7] Four of the Great Cascades feed into the Black Marsh.[2]

The Darkenheights is to the east of most of the Black Marsh[1], rising some 2,500 ft above it according to "S".[2]
