The Smythes of Dementlieu are a family that clawed its way up from commoner status to lesser nouveau riche aristocracy sometime during the False History of Dementlieu.
For the past three generations, the family has been involved with the Fraternity of Shadows, implying a predilection for arcane magic - but the involvement runs strictly along the male line. Although the family as a whole seems to be aware of the Fraternity's true nature, with a tendency for fathers to push their sons to pursue membership, daughters are not so 'encouraged'.
In spite of the family's apparent fixation on the Fraternity, no one born of their bloodline has managed to reach the organization's highest ranks - yet.
With the murder of Aleister Smythe's infant child, the direct family line may be functionally extinct - unless Aleister conceives more children. There are several distaff and cousin branches of the family, however, meaning the bloodline will continue even if the name and accompanying title come to an end.
(There is no known connection between the Dementlieuse Smythes and the Smythes of Paridon.)
