A spy engages in espionage. He or she is a researcher and a discoverer of knowledge who does not want to be recognised as such lest his or her work be impeded or stopped. He or she is a deceiver of those who might not otherwise wish to share information with him or her and of those who might otherwise act to prevent him or her from gathering information. He or she acts as the agent of a party who seeks knowledge of some other party whom he or she then targets.
