Religion is faith in the gods as opposed to atheism is the absence of belief in the gods. A religion doubts neither the existence nor the intentions of its god. Religions are, moreover, institutions. They are oganising principles that make their follower and the people of whole lands what they are. To understand a religion is to go a long way to understanding the society that is its incarnation.
