The heretic is at once faithful to a religion that he or she has no intention of abandonning and a questioner of one or more of the tenants of that religion as they are currently understood. A heretic is a doctrinal innovator but it is equally a doctrinal dissent. Existing authority judges the heretic to be a rebel who dreams of leading a revolution.
