The waxing moon describes the state of the moon between the end of the new moon and the beginning of the full moon as it passes from being a razor thin crescent moon or sickle moon to being a gibbous moon that is ultimately but a razor's edge from becoming a full moon. The opposite of the waxing moon is the waning moon.
