Carbon is a chemical element. Its identification as such is a cultural level 10 scientific event, albeit one early in the period. That is to say carbon as such is unknown in the Land of Mists. It has not yet been discovered by either alchemists or chemists. Both pure and impure forms of carbon are, however, well known, although their common basis is not knonw. Diamond and graphite are pure forms of carbon. The the discovery of each is a cultural level 2 event. Charcoal, soot, coal, and biomass are impure forms of carbon. The use of charcoal and soot in art dates to its very advent and with it the beginning of cultural level 1 cultural events. The discovery and use of coal is a cultural level 2 event.
