Desmond LaRouche was a young, idealist physician who was raised, instructed and mentored by a version of the Hiregaard-Malken pair badly at odds with prior material. He would end up as a half-golem as the result of a confrontation with Malken and a subsequent life saving intervention of Dr. Hiregaard.

Presumably Malken took a dim view on his efforts on the part of Tristen. Given his name and secondarily his profession, it is probable that he is from Dementlieu or perhaps Richemulot. Whatever the chemicals did to him, they presumably did not make him a half-golem.
