The SRD of Edition 3.5 adds to Craft (Alchemy) the prerequisite of spellcaster: "To make an item using Craft (alchemy), you must have alchemical equipment and be a spellcaster."
The addition of this prerequisite produces absurdities in the Land of Mists. For few if any black powder avengers or pistoleers are going to be spellcasters. And no self-respecting gunpowder maker or alchemist in Lamordia, not to mention Mordenheim himself, is going to be a spellcaster. Hence one solution is to introduce into Ravenloft a new profession and a new skill: the chemist and the Craft (Chemistry) skill.
