The heretic is at once a believer of a religion that he or she has no intention of abandonning and a questioner of one or more of the tenants of that religion, at least as they are currently understood. A heretic is a doctrinal innovator but it is equally a doctrinal dissent. Existing authority judges the heretic to be a rebel who dreams of leading a revolution and consequently declare him or her a religious criminal. The religious crime of the heretic is heresy, his believes and teachings are heretical. Heretics tend to meet gruesome ends. Rarely they give birth to new religions by ways of schisms.
