In Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, the devil's tree^[1] is a fleshy "plant" that exists within the Devil's Garden of Castle Ravenloft. Each devil's tree was once a humanoid that served as a host for a garden larva and was killed. The devil's tree bears the general shape and a basic physical resemblance to the host but brain activity, personality, and abilities of the host are all dead and nonfunctional. Instead, the trees provide a psychic source of power for the Dayheart.

Technically, the immature form of the devil's tree is a garden larva, a tiny fiend that forces itself down a victims throat and consumes the unfortunate from the inside with acid. Once slain, the victim gradually transforms into one of thee devil's trees. A devil tree then bears several more garden larva as "fruit".
