Canon Information

Shadows are malignant, incorporeal undead comprised entirely of incarnate darkness. Although they are not particularly hurt by light compared to other similar creatures, shadows nonetheless prefer to dwell in heavily shaded areas. Shadows are filled with only loathing for living in an equal degree that they despise light. A shadow's touch inflicts ability damage to Strength, weakening it with negative energy.[1]

Should a humnaoid character drop to zero Strength from a shadow's touch perishes and will soon rise as a new shadow under the control of its creator.[1] This is a primary way for new shadows to come into being, but there are other ways. Powerful spellcasters can create shadows via the Create Greater Undead spell[2] In the Demiplane of Dread, shadows may spawn from Illusion (Shadow) spells gone awry. A shadow may be spawned from the victim of a shadow asp bite.[3][4][5]

In addition to the normal type of undead shadow, there is a greater shadow that demonstrates greater power and resilience. The greater shadow is also capable of employing more mobile skirmishing tactics.[1]

Encounter Areas

Shadows can be encountered in the domain of Avonleigh,[6], Barovia[7], Cavitius[8], Darkon[9], Falkovnia[10], Forlorn[11], Hazlan[12], Invidia[13], Keening[14], Mordent[15][16], Necropolis[17], Nova Vaasa[18], Richemulot[19], Sebua[20], Sithicus[21], the Shadow Rift[22], and Valachan[23]. Prior to its dissolution, shadows could be encountered in Daglan.[24] Although they cannot enter dreamscapes of the Nightmare Lands, shadows are known to haunt the Terrain Between the waking world and that of dreams.[25]

As undead, shadows can be found in Har'Akir[26][27], Mordent[28][29], and Sanguinia[30]
