A spell scroll bears one or more spells. A spellcaster reads a spell from the scroll to cast it, with the words of the spell disappearing from sight as they are read. A spell scroll allows a spellcaster to cast more than his or her daily allotment of spells. Additionally, a spell scroll allows him or her to have at hand a wider range of spells including one or more spells that may rarely be needed but that when needed are essential. Finally, a spell scroll prepared by another spellcaster with access to higher level spells affords a spellcaster access, albeit not without risk, to one or more of those higher level spells.
